Originally I would open FB to see an occasional note about what someone is doing, a picture of a life milestone, something funny or interesting, all in all the kinds of things that are a pleasant diversion to read. Or to ignore.

More recently, it’s become a list of who had what for breakfast.

I read an article in Scientific American a while ago that suggests that the people who spend the most time on Facebook, and are the most prolific posters, are more likely to be narcissistic or have low self-esteem.

The article is at http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=status-update-im-so-glamorous

One thing I *do* notice is that the most prolific posters seem to be structuring an online persona that doesn’t necessarily square with the real world.

So there are far too many people who believe that the minutiae of their lives is fascinating to everyone else; and ironically they all seem to have groups of hangers-on who *LIKE* everything that gets posted. I suppose it’s what’s fed the blogworld as well; all Facebook did was make it easier. And more visible. So before it degrades any further into navel-gazing self-absorption, here are a few thoughts or suggestions for posters.

Before you post, stop and think about whether what you are posting is of interest. Does it offer anything to others, or is merely a platform for you to talk about yourself?

If you post a status update, and then comment on your own status update, you should seriously consider taking up a hobby or two.

If you post photos of other people, make sure the photos aren’t embarrassing or controversial. Or at least get permission from the subject first. Unless you tag someone, and unless that person USES facebook, they have no way of knowing that precious yet embarrassing moment is out there for the world to see (including prospective employers, employees, co-workers, police, voters, your minister, your parents, your kids and everyone else).

If you post comments about other people, give yourself the 10-second re-read before sending. Before you send it, stop, count to 10 slowly, re-read it, and then decide whether you should post it or not.

While Facebook’s definition of a “friend” isn’t exactly from Funk & Wagnalls, do you really need to share your life with someone who you haven’t seen since grade 2? Or just sat next to on a plane? Consider carefully before accepting friend requests, and be diligent about removing people whom you don’t communicate with or realize you have little in contact with. Do you REALLY know everyone on your friend’s list?

Pay attention to your security settings. When you post something, be aware of who can see it. Be aware of what people who AREN’T your friends can view on your profile. Think about it; your name and date of birth is enough to get a good head-start on identity theft.

If you have more than 50 or 60 friends, acknowledge that you probably don’t know some of them very well. Think about that when you post something. Think about that when you put something on someone else’s wall; while you might control who can see YOUR profile, you don’t know what your friends permit. If someone comments on one of your photos, the weird FB security rules seem to make that picture available to that peron’s friends regardless of your settings.

There are lots of perverts out there, and something like FB is a great resource for them too. If you want to post stuff about your kids, or your friend’s kids, then think about creating a small group and sharing those posts only with that group. If you post your child’s name, picture, and where they go to school or daycare, you’re providing some very dangerous weapons. Go back and read #5 again.

FB is a great tool, but it’s becoming an out-of-control train with nobody at the wheel. And if you want to ignore me after this post, please do so.
